What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity refers to the natural range of variations in the way the human brain functions and experiences the world. These neurological differences are viewed as valuable contributions to the diversity of the human experience, rather than pathologies.
This perspective challenges the traditional medical model that frames neurological variation as disorders or impairment; instead, it advocates for the recognition that the unique perspectives and abilities of neurodivergent individuals can enrich our society.
The neurodiversity movement calls for creating accessible, equitable, and empowering environments that support the diverse needs and strengths of people across the neurological spectrum.
Our
Mission
NeuroDiversity Association Hong Kong (NDAHK) is an advocacy organization committed to promoting the value of neurodiversity. Through establishing ourselves as an integrated platform, we aim to foster synergies from collaborative partnerships across different sectors and collectively cultivate a culture that values the diversity of all neurological spectrums and empower all individuals to thrive.
Tell Us More About Neurodiversity!
It is estimated that 15 - 20% of the population is neurodivergent. Some common types of neurodiversity include Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disorders, etc. Individuals with similar neurotypes share some common features yet each individual is still unique in his/her characters, potentials and strengths.
Neurodiversity
As A Spectrum
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in how the human brain processes information and experiences the world. It is a spectrum that encompasses a range of neurological differences, including conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and many others, each with its unique neurological profile, strengths and challenges.
Neurodiversity
As A Movement
Neurodiversity movement recognizes that neurodiversed individuals have typically and historically faced discrimination, stigma, and barriers to inclusion. Advocating for neurodiversity is therefore seen as a movement, promoting the focus and recognitions on the development of the potentials and strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
Neurodiversity
As A Strength
Rather than viewing neurological differences as deficits or disorders, the concept of neurodiversity celebrates the diverse array of cognitive abilities and perspectives that individuals possess. It recognizes that these differences are part of the natural human variation and can be valuable assets in various contexts.
Neurodiversity
As A Paradigm Shift
Neurodiversity represents a paradigm shift in how we understand and approach neurological differences. Instead of a medical model that frames these differences as deficits, the neurodiversity approach emphasizes the inherent value and potential of individuals with diverse cognitive profiles.
Why Does It Matter To Me?
Recognizing the inherent value of neurodiversity is crucial for driving our societal development. Neurodiverse individuals often possess different ways of thinking, processing information, and problem-solving that can offer invaluable contributions to society. By harnessing this cognitive diversity, we can foster innovation, enhance creativity, and develop more comprehensive solutions to complex challenges.
Neurodiversity is not only a matter of individual rights and empowerment, but also a significant asset for the betterment of society as a whole. When we value neurodiversity, we unlock a wealth of untapped human potential that can drive progress across diverse domains - from groundbreaking innovations to meaningful social change.
By recognizing the unique contributions that neurodiverse individuals can make, we strengthen the fabric of our communities and create a more cohesive and thriving world for everyone.
